{"id":656,"date":"2019-10-09T19:22:25","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T19:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pss.austincc.edu\/exercise\/?page_id=656"},"modified":"2020-04-10T20:33:06","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T20:33:06","slug":"meet-ken","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/education.austincc.edu\/exercise\/meet-ken\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet Ken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-648 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/education.austincc.edu\/exercise\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/Pic_Ken_Final-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Former Student, Ken Exercise Science department\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ken, give a little background history of yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m semi-retired and a Group Exercise Instructor who works with seniors.\u00a0 Currently I do part-time Senior Enrichment Programming for the Austin Parks and Recreation Department.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What made you decide to pursue this area of study (i.e. Exercise Science)?<\/p>\n<p><strong>I wanted to be better able to tailor exercise programs to individual senior\u2019s needs, which I found somewhat challenging to achieve in a Group Exercise class situation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What made you to decide to pursue this interest in the Exercise Science program at ACC?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Convenient locations and low cost.\u00a0 Also, knowing that the program had highly qualified Instructors, and that credits earned in the ACC Exercise Science Program could transfer, either immediately or later, to higher degree-granting institutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What was the most challenging\/difficult part of the program?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pacing oneself.\u00a0 It\u2019s tempting to want to get it over with as quickly as possible, or even to just pursue a one-semester certificate and get out to work in the field, but that doesn\u2019t allow you enough time to let the knowledge go deep within you, and cheats you of the hands-on training experiences that the longer programs provide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What was the best\/most beneficial part of the program?<\/p>\n<p><strong>I loved all the practical applications in the formally-credited laboratory sections, as well as in the informal one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are you currently employed as a Personal Fitness Trainer?\u00a0 If so, at what capacity?\u00a0 If not, why not?<\/p>\n<p><strong>I continue to work in my previous capacity as a Recreation Activity Leader until the right Personal Trainer opportunity presents itself.\u00a0 Also, I am more focused on additional studies, having been accepted to the MS program in Exercise and Sport Science at Texas State University.\u00a0 When I have settled into that program, I will explore more Personal Training options.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you had a single piece of advice for someone interested in being a Personal Fitness Trainer, what would it be?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn as much as you can!\u00a0 Dive into the science.\u00a0 And, be aware of the great array of individual differences.\u00a0 Just because you love a given program or exercise or activity, doesn\u2019t necessarily make it right or best for all of your clients.\u00a0 Listen to them, both the verbal and the non-verbal cues, to learn what makes them tick and what might benefit them most.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back to <a href=\"https:\/\/education.austincc.edu\/exercise\/our-students\/\">Meet a Graduate<\/a> Page<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ken, give a little background history of yourself.
